Pickup month at LonePhantom.com

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

This month has become pickup month at LonePhantom.com headquarters. I’ve been lucky enough to score a number of new model pickups, a classic, and a great Australian boutique handwound humbucker to test and review. There’s currently four humbuckers installed in three different guitars that I have to test, and two more awaiting installation in my RG470 project.

Joe Naylor's awesome new Railhammer pickups.

First up are a set of new Railhammer Chisel humbuckers. Created by the noted Joe Naylor (of Reverend Guitars, Armor Gold Cables and more), the Railhammer pickups are a new concept in humbucker design, with thin rails over the bass strings, and fat pole pieces for the treble strings.

The idea behind this is that the rails sense a narrow section of the bass strings, reducing smearing and muddiness. The oversized pole pieces sense a wide section of the treble strings, increasing thickness and sustain. All of these gives a rich clarity, while still providing a thick organic tone. (more…)

My top picks for Winter NAMM 2012

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Like many other musicians I look forward to seeing what new products are announced when Winter NAMM comes around each year. Last year I spent some time posting quite a few new products that caught my eye. This year I didn’t really have the time to post about them as it was a flat out week on the home front with my wife’s and my son’s birthdays all within the days that NAMM was on. Now that NAMM is over I thought that I might write a post covering the new products that excited me the most this year. So lets get started: (more…)

Confessions of a noobie electronics tinkerer – part 2: Pick me up

Anyone can perform DIY!

I think most people are a little scared to open up and tinker around with their guitar pickups and effects pedals. It’s like there’s some sort of special voodoo magic inside the components that shape our tone. Truth be told most of the time there’s nothing too crazy to deal with, and as long as we are careful and methodical anyone can experiment and modify.

Let me start off by saying my family jokes around and calls me “Tim the Tool Man Taylor”, the hilarious main character from the nineties sitcom “Home Improvement”. As anyone familiar with this show would know Tim was a well meaning DIY kind of guy with his own cable TV program, who couldn’t help but continually break and destroy whatever he was working on. Now I am not that bad, but I have had my moments. My Dad and brother definitely got the handy man skills, but I’m not completely useless, and I usually know my limits.

I’ve been playing guitar for nearly two decades now, but I’ve only in the past year or so gathered up the courage to try some guitar related electronics DIY. I wanted to write a couple of articles for those of you who have thought about getting into DIY, but haven’t felt confident enough to actually embark on the journey. I want to let you know that even if you are clumsy, and a bit of a “Tim the Tool Man Taylor” like me you can still give it a go and have lots of fun doing so.

If you are interested, and missed it, part 1 was about modifying effects pedals. (more…)

Modifying pickups – PAF Pro on steriods

Ibanez RG550 20th Anniversary Reissue with DiMarzio PAF Pro installed

One of my first forays into modifying pickups was swapping the stock Alnico 5 magnet with a ceramic magnet in a DiMarzio PAF Pro. In the end the problem I had with this modification was that I found I had too much treble, and the pickup was a bit too twangy for my liking. I reverted the PAF Pro back to stock, and then put it into the neck position of my RG550, and dropped a DiMarzio Tone Zone into the bridge position.

After learning a bit more about magnets, and their uses in pickups I decided that I would try putting the PAF Pro back in the bridge position, and load it up with an Alnico 8 magnet.

The Alnico 8 magnet is capable of providing the same warm tone that an Alnico 5 provides, but boosts the output much like a ceramic magnet. It’s kind of the best of both worlds when it comes down to it. (more…)

More meddling with the DiMarzio Tone Zone

Friday, March 4th, 2011

DiMarzio Tone ZoneFollowing on from my “Taming the Tone Zone – continued” post, I have been conducting some more “invasive” modifications to the popular DiMarzio pickup. I decided to open up the Tone Zone and try some magnet modifications.

Some people are probably questioning my reasons for doing so many modifications with pickups. “Why don’t I just buy something that suits you better” I’m sure is something many would say. The reason is that I’m quite often on a strict budget, being a family man with mortgage, kids and all. Tinkering away with things to suit me better saves me the hassle of buying and selling, and is usually quite minimal in cost. Plus it’s also fun to experiment with things, and make something kind of unique. (more…)
