My top picks for Winter NAMM 2012

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Like many other musicians I look forward to seeing what new products are announced when Winter NAMM comes around each year. Last year I spent some time posting quite a few new products that caught my eye. This year I didn’t really have the time to post about them as it was a flat out week on the home front with my wife’s and my son’s birthdays all within the days that NAMM was on. Now that NAMM is over I thought that I might write a post covering the new products that excited me the most this year. So lets get started: (more…)

MXR Noise Clamp – review

Stop that unwanted noise!

Playing at high gain, or with a lot of pedals in your chain can cause numerous noise issues, combining both even more so.

A noise gate is the perfect thing to help control unwanted noise, but they can introduce their own set of problems. Some noise gates can alter a players tone, and many may not be happy with that. If a noise gate is set with moderate gating it’s not usually a problem, the difference in tone is fairly marginal. If the noise gate needs to be set very high things can get pretty messy.

Jim Dunlop may very well have solved this problem with their new noise gate, the MXR Noise Clamp.

The Noise Clamp comes with the regular input and output jacks, and then also has its own effects loop, where you can plug in all of the pedals you may have in front of your amplifier. With this setup the Noise Clamp can sense your guitar’s dry signal, and then reduce the noise level inside the pedal’s effects loop. (more…)

New Gear Day (NGD): MXR Noise Clamp and Jim Dunlop Ultex Jazz III 2.0 picks

The MXR Noise Clamp

I got home from work today to discover a box from Jim Dunlop had just been delivered by the postman. Thanks to Brandon at Jim Dunlop I have a brand new MXR Noise Clamp pedal, and a bag of sweet new Ultex Jazz III 2.0 picks to review. Both of these products were released earlier this year at the 2011 Winter NAMM show.

I previously reviewed the MXR Smart Gate, and found it to be  an excellent noise gate. It was only capable of being in front of the amp, or in the effects loop. The new Noise Clamp can cover both options, giving you full noise gate functionality from just one pedal. I’m looking forward to trying this out in my rig when I next jam with my band. It should prove to be the perfect addition to my pedalboard. (more…)

New pedal build: MXR Distortion+ clone part 1

My second DIY pedal build - slightly modified MXR Distortion+ clone

Over the past few weeks I’ve been spending my spare time working on a new pedal build, my first using an integrated circuit (IC). The MXR Distortion+ circuit is a fairly simple circuit to build, using the LM741 operational amplifier (op amp), two diodes, and a handful of capacitors and resistors.

Like my LPB-1 build, I worked on strip board again, as I have quite a bit left over from the previous project. I used the same 1590B-style enclosure as well.

The bill of materials for this circuit is as follows: (more…)
